Design Your Next Chapter: A Guide to Making the Most of Life After 50

"Hitting 50 doesn't mean a crisis, it's just a completion of old dreams and goals"
Happy and Strong over 50. It is worth the effort

So, you’ve hit 50, or maybe you’ve passed it by a few years. Life’s been quite a ride, right? I sure hope it has for you. You’ve worked hard and seen a lot, and maybe now you’re looking around, wondering what the hell to do next. As someone who still looks in the mirror and gets shocked that I’m not eighteen anymore, despite feeling that youthful inside, it’s with a smile that I stare back and marvel at the sheer speed at which it all went by. Growing up, I was one of those little shits who would look at men in their fifties and swear blind that I would never get that old. Ha! The universe does enjoy a little payback.

Here I am in my mid-fifties, thinking about all the damn cliches that I had uttered along the way. Over the Hill. Set in his ways. Dinosaur. Midlife Crisis member. Past his prime. Grumpy old man. The last one I now use with relish when trying to explain to fluffy HR types out there why I simply don’t give a crap about certain things anymore. As you notice the long road behind you and the shorter one ahead, it’s quite normal to take stock of your life during this phase by asking yourself a few tough questions. Have you been true to yourself along the way? Are you happy with where you ended up today? Did you achieve any of the goals you set for yourself? Are you happy?

Hitting 50 means answering some questions for yourself

As you notice the long road behind you and the shorter one ahead, it’s quite normal to take stock of your life during this phase by asking yourself a few tough questions. Have you been true to yourself along the way? Are you happy with where you ended up today? Did you achieve any of the goals you set for yourself? Are you happy?

I’ll discuss this a little more at length, but we really mustn’t fall for all the “over the hill” narrative. This isn’t about going downhill. It’s about changing gears. Think of it like this. You’ve built a solid house over the last thirty or forty years, and now it’s time to enjoy it. You have the time and experience to start planning a new room or two that you have always wanted. The kids are gone, so you can convert those rooms into a pub, or maybe it’s time to sell up and move to a different country where you and your wife can live a simpler, more fulfilling life.

This guide is for you, the bloke who’s spent years getting his hands dirty, building things, and providing for his family. It’s about taking a breather, figuring out what you really want now, and realising this next chapter can be the best one yet.
