Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan—2010

Her lithe figure disappeared through the wooden doorway leaving Hudson Drake staring at the spot that her perfect bottom had graced. Flicking a glance to his left through the dirty windows, he caught sight of her walking away from the small bar, her long curly black hair swaying across her back as she walked across the narrow road. A small hybrid vehicle braked and stopped a few metres away. The middle-aged Japanese driver motioned for her to pass in front of him and Hudson caught himself smiling as she skipped, cat-like, on her toes, to get out of the way of the impatient man who followed her body with a lingering stare before driving off. A smile beamed across her face as she looked back at the bar, lighting up her olive-tanned Spanish features. Hudson had never met a woman like her.

‘You’d better watch yourself around that black-haired beauty, son,’ a voice behind him said in a rich northern English accent.

Handcuffs weren’t supposed to be comfortable, but the idiot across from him had overdone it this time.

Joe Dixon looked at the silver rings of metal then leant forward and clunked them down on the table. The interrogation room smelt of sweat and bad breath. A dishevelled looking detective inspector, with greasy black hair, looked at his watch and then rubbed his chin. DI Cook sat back and folded his arms across his coffee-stained denim shirt. A narrow face with a pointed chin and beady eyes scanned Joe’s face.

‘Dixon,’ he said. ‘I told you I’d get you. Dirty cops like you always get caught.’

Patparganj Industrial Area, New Delhi, India – 2014

 

A blue haze from the burning of elephant grass created a murky atmosphere down the long road where they were parked. The oppressive heat of the day called out for the relief of the coming monsoon, but that was still weeks away. At midday, the tarred streets were devoid of the thronging crowds that would arrive later in the afternoon when it was cooler. Incessant droning from the tuk-tuk engines accompanied by the squawking hooters from impatient drivers ratcheted up the anxiety in everyone inside the vehicle.
